Well I have a watervalve that need some tourqe to turn...the land &sea valve I think operates easier.

I don't think you need a gear box for this valve. It is symmetrically made so should be fairly easy to turn. I don't know exactly the torque you need though. You can also use a powerful servo.

Hi boz race engines  " NICE you have bitten the bullet and the SF901 is getting a facelift   how does kim kardashian say nice ?"   if that valve is of your SF901engine dyno that looks like one full turn from full open to fully closed....... any chance while you have the valve apart more picturs of the centre shaft in more detail and some measurements ? If it's not to much troubles ?

Why  use a servo motor  Jostien ? A high torque nema23 steppermotor will be ample my thinking. Nema23 size stepper motors come in many torque outputs.

Jostein you should get s " STICKY " post section going on here where varies dyno conversion stay on top of the front page of FAQ's ..... which people can read immediately  without search  the whole forum for specific repeatable  questions. Just a thought.

@mach_1 yep no problems, I can take it apart and get some pics and dimensions

im confused on stepper verses servo and which way I should go? im just a engine builder sorry haha, but I do believe I can make it all happen with a bit of help. im pretty sure the valve is one rotation operation, I cannot see how it could work with 2 or 3 rotations.

@boz-race-engines

The control you are showing is for a steppermotor I think..simular to mine and in the amount of steps from zero to full open is controlled from your dyno software....you set the steps from there.

The problem with stepper motors is ...if the valve needs more moment (tourqe) than the motor can give , the stepper motor can jump some steps and the valve is not in the right position.  therefore you need a steppermotor that can handle more tourqe than the valve needs.

@boz-race-engines, the stepper vs servo is mostly a matter of taste and availabiliy. Both will work given they are dimensioned correctly.

Dimension correctly means in the stepper case just strong enough. In the servo case it means strong enough and fast enough. Servos have built in gear box, so you can get them very strong but slow.

As @yhakan says, steppers can jump steps if they are not powerful enough. This means they are out of sync, so the 0 position and 100% position are not where the stepper thinks they are. Servos don't do that, they always catch up. Now you can also get steppers with feedback, which essentially does the same as a servo then! This is a nice solution.

Indeed that valve is less than 1 turn, maybe 3/4 or so.

@admin

ok so I think I will go with a stepper motor, will this work well with my water valve? im thinking 400 steps per revolution may be better seeing as my valve will only need 3/4 to 1 turn max would this be correct? thanks
