would this be powerful enough?

This high torque and precision bipolar Nema 17 stepper motor with 0.9° step angle (400 steps/revolution). Each phase draws current 2A, allowing for a holding torque of 46Ncm(65.1oz.in).

would 3nm be enough torque to operate the water brake valve? cheers

Yes 425oz.In/3Nm stepper motor is ample

@mach_1 awesome thanks mate, all ordered, i ordered a hybrid bipolar style as they reckon they are more powerfull and dont lose position, so close now

Sounds good. The Land & Sea valve is just 55 steps from fully open to fully closed, and it works surprisingly good. It hunts between steps a little in steady state, but RPM control is very good. 

But your idea of 400 steps should work good too. Otherwise you can try the micro stepping option, which most controllers support.

Boz , that is a typical older round stepper from superflow. They now use a NEMA 23 Stepper , with a potentiometer feed back.

That is also the Superflow valve , it is very finicky as far as set up goes . It rotates about 240 - 270 degrees open to close.

You need to make sure the bushings are tight but smooth and free , I used delrin for mine .They also have only about .015 thousands ( dont Know the Metric ) total clearance. I use an .008 feeler on the bottom and ,006 on the top to set the clearance in the spool. That is with the cupped end of the shaft pushed down onto the ball bearing in the blind end plate . If the bushes are loose and end play is off , the spool will bind in the housing .Makes the control unstable as the stepper struggles with the friction ( stepper loses counts trying to ever come the friction ) . Ive rebuilt several of those dynos if you have any questions.

@dunnitagain thankyou for the info, i will check the clearances on the valve, i have the nema 23 with feed back on it so hopefully it wont lose any steps etc. i have to go through the superflow instructions and see how to set it from closed to open and which way it turns etc. im not far away from putting a motor on to test now. just making a couple of bellhousings atm.

If you need help , I can tell you how to set your valve , its all on the 802 card in the back of the console.

@dunnitagain ok thanks but im controlling mine from the Yourdyno system with a seperate power supply and stepper controller, i am hardly using anything from the original console apart from switches and throttle

Boz , is the Superflow software dead? Do you have the manual that shows you where the valve is Open , and Closed ?

I'm very interested in your outcome , I have opportunity to purchase 2 dead superflows , if they can be successfully retrofit

I may use the components you did.

@dunnitagain hi i couldnt get it to work with the old program and computer it wouldnt communicate. so i thought i would just bypass it all on the control side of things, i could get load control knob to work manually and it may have worked but without the pc program responding there would have been no readings and graphs etc, so i decided to go this way as the yourdyno does the controlling not just read results like the old system

so i used the original plug and wiring harness on dyno for electronic throttle control for the stepper motor control. that way it all plugs into the plug in box under the drip tray
