Hell. I am looking for some suggestions as to a suitable size retarder for a motorcycle and quad inertia dyno that I want to fit a retarder onto.

These are two dynos and I want to swap the retarder between the 2 as I require.

They both have a single roller, 250mm diameter, 500 wide for the motorcycle unit and 1.2m wide for the quad unit.

I may eventually also decide just to fit it on the quad unit subject to some suggestions coming out of this post.

Both rollers have a huge weight wheel fitted to the roller, solid steel of 400mm diameter by 90mm thick.

So one of the questions is what effect will this heavy weight have to the controllability of to dyno rpm control.

I have purchased a Your dyno controller and all instrumentation to go with.

My main objective with the dyno and the fitment of the retarder is do fine tune fuel and ignition at specified RPM settings,

So want to keep the motor at a certain rpm and a throttle position while adjusting fuel or ignition and recording power gain/loss.

I have found a Chinese mnft that has units rated at 500, 750 1000 and 2000 Nm.

I don't think the 1000 and 2000Nm units would be suitable so remain with 500 and 750

Please feel free to raise questions and make some suggestions.

This will be my first time actually tuning and working on a dyno.

.

Welcome to the forum. Get rid of the heavy weights, you don't need them if you're  fitting electric brake retarder(s).

Cheers

@mach_1 If the dyno is already fitted with weights, removing is a PITA as well as not the question asked.

I want to ask the same question. A retarder to add to my inertial dyno.

@mach_1 Lets see how the weights are connected to the shaft, if it is easy enough, then they are off.

I assume will be less load on the retarder to actually control the load you are trying to apply.

Any idea of retarder size??

My two cents worth!! Get rid of the heavy weights, you don't need them if you're  fitting electric brake retarder(s).

As far as recommending  a brake retarder size ? What is the maximum Hp/torque you plan to test? roller diameter size, speed you intend to turn the roller(s) will influence your choice? Does that help ?

@mach_1 It helps some. I understand the "don't need them" concept regarding the weighted drums. However, replacing with unweighted drums is a task not desired. Make it easy and cost effective and I would go that route.

Also, I recognize that the weight removed from the drums can be used to raise the maximum axel weight. My current axel weight max is 1,500 lb. 2,000 would be much better for the small 2WD FWD cars.

The closest model to mine is the Dynojet 200ix https://www.dynojet.com/motorcycle-atv-trike-de-go-kart-chassis-dynamometer-model-200ix/

The drum/carriage specifications are the same as my 188. The packaging and RPM sensor is "upgraded".

Max HP/Torque is 750rwhp/750'lb. I would like more up to 1500 but...

So...

I know so little about sizing the brake/retarder...

any suggestions on an eddy current brake?
