EMI source finding

Hi folks,
I have been using yourdyno v4 on my eddy current brake for years. It has always worked perfectly. Last year I changed from a voltage regulated to a current regulated power supply. The signal is transmitted via PWM. I was aware that this could cause problems with emi, but I had no problems during this time. Unfortunately now i have a very expensive motor on it that is causing problems. The brake fails at high loads.
I think the problems are caused by the ignition system.
@Jostein, do you have any idea how to find the EMI source cheaply ? The customer is complaining about my brake and I am looking for the fault in his ignition. In addition, he has not tuned the engine properly, so that the ignition is stressed to the maximum.
Best regards and many thanks in advance
Frank

Hi,

In general for EMI reduction you can

  • Make sure the dyno chassis, dyno box and the engine/car are grounded
  • Move sensors, cables and electronic boxes away from noise generating components
  • Use an optically isolated usb cable, like this one for example: https://www.digikey.no/en/products/detail/tripp-lite/U428F-10M-D321/17766911
  • Use resistorized spark plugs and noise dampened spark plug wires
  • Try to shield the noise generating components

I don't know what power supply you use, but in general PWM is very good in terms of EMI tolerance, so I doubt the issue is with the PWM. You can create the results tab called Brake setup analysis (there is a template for it) and see what is going on with the brake % from YourDyno. You can also check out the Load cell 1 torque to see if the load cell follows the Brake1%. Current follows brake force pretty well. Also, it is always more difficult to debug a setup when the engine is running rough
