Hi,

Yes, it does not work on 5V, unfortunately, so it needs separate power. It seems stable and good at 12V, but I need to test a bit more.

It needs a transistor or an optocoupler to connect to YourDyno, I will post the diagram.

Hi guys, check out the latest video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=057WtU8TqMs

The MSD works very well! It needs a small $5 interface in addition as explained in the video.

This is really nice.

Makes me think we could make a wheel slip plugin. Would be cool to plot engine rpm and roller rpm (after its locked in) to detect if clutch is slipping or tires, etc.

@barrymaxx, yes we should create that plugin. It is definitely possible to make, not very difficult either. I will put it on the list, or maybe someone wants go give a go at making a plugin!

cool great to see it works and was not any expensive adaptors just a $5 part to make it work

mark,

I am building a ASM97 currently as well!

My advice is be careful with that eddy power supply. I made a bonehead move trying to scope the load side waveform. My scope wasn't isolated from ground and I let the smoke out of that card. I found a burnt trace on the pcb and repaired that but now all it does is produce full power, I cant modulate it with a 0-5v or 0-10v.

I am excited to see your build. I am currently re-gearing mine to slow the flywheel and eddy down so I can spin the rollers at a much faster speed than the rated "60 mph"

How are you re-gearing your dyno?
I just picked up a ASM-97 as well, and i need to re-gear it to do at least 130.

I just picked up a ASM-97 as well, and i need to re-gear it to do at least 130.

My ASM97 is geared 2.25:1, meaning the flywheel turns 2.25 times per roller revolution.

At the factory rated 60MPH the flywheel is doing 5270 RPMs. If you gear it 1:1, 130mph will put you at 5143 rpm... should be very safe.

Im gearing mine 1:1 and going to spin it to 170 max. Thats a flywheel speed of around 7000 rpm. Equivalent flywheel speed at 80mph with the stock gearing.... Ive tested it and nothing bad happened. Not many cars I work on have that kind of wheel speed so using it at those speeds is infrequent.

I also noticed that the belt skips fairly easily when doing second gear pulls, even on 200hp cars. I will be redesigning the belt tensioner so it cant flex as much.

I got the parts to re-gear it from industrial suppliers. All the shafts are standard size. Mines got 8mm pitch 85mm pulleys. I have seen some of these dynos only come with a 55mm belt but mine luckilly has the 85mm. Stock belt size is 1760-8M-85. I need to finish up some modifications to get my bigger pulley to fit, then I will measure for the new belt size.

If you have any other questions let me know.

Yeah. I have not the slightest idea where i would start for a regear.

Would i Just need to replace the gears with 2 same sized ones or ?
What size would they be. I have the same dyno as you, just not knowing where to start on this

Also wouldn't regearing affect the maximum power that the factory retarder could absorb?

My rollers have 80 tooth sprockets on them, so I am putting an 80 tooth on the flywheel shaft.

Yes it gives the brake less mechanical advantage. Well see what kind of power it can absorb. I know through some testing that in stock form it had enough power to totally stall a 200hp car in 3rd gear. I dont expect much out of it however.

I wonder if there is some way. I can apply maybe a 4:1 ratio on the brake only?

where do you get the new pulleys and how much do they cost

They are standard 8mm pitch by 85mm wide pullies.  Trade size would be 80-8m-85... There used on all kinds of industrial and manufacturing equipment. Heres one for reference https://www.zoro.com/continental-pulley-hawk-pd-80-teeth-85mmw-p80-8m-85-e/i/G2216322/

I grabbed one used on ebay for cheap. You will need to buy an approiate QD hub to adapt the pulley to your shaft. Every bearing and QD on this dyno is standard so its easy to source parts for.

I ran some numbers regarding mechanical advantage on the eddy brake... Its negligible because now you are running 4th gear vs second gear. Brake and flywheel RPM remain within the stock parameters, but the engine is turning the wheels alot faster. This means less torque at the rollers and the belt. This plus the much larger pulley contact should allow the belt to handle substantially more power (hoping for 500whp or more).

Heres some numbers. Example car has 200 ft/lb at the crank. With the transmission in second gear on a stock mustang ASM97, the brake is feeling 233 ftlb. This has me at a redline around 67mph. With the same car in its 1:1 gear, with the dyno also regeared to 1:1, the brake is feeling 210ftlb. The actual numbers dont matter, what does matter is that I have cut the force the belt sees by over half. The second part of why I did this is to slightly increase the inertia of the dyno. Now I am accelerating the rollers from 40-150mph instead of just 20-60mph. The flywheel and brake effective inertia remains the same however.

@barrymaxx

So if i were to order this pulley.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/TB-Woods-P80-8M-85-E-High-Torque-Series-Timing-Belt-Sprocket-USA-NIB/184087484552?hash=item2adc781888:g:ts4AAOxyBotTYD40

What type of bushing would i need to fit my 1 3/4" shaft that my current small pulley is on?
