Help with a dyno

Hi all, 

 

I  did do some searches on the forum but could not find anything that would help so here goes...

 

I want to build a small engine dyno for high-performance model engines. These engines are 2 stroke single-cylinder engines that are fuelled with methanol. 

 

They are used in tethered hydroplanes and tethered cars and can reach speeds in excess of 200mph

 

We are in the process of developing an engine and are nearing the point where we would like to refine the design through dyno development

 

The issue I have is that ideally, we would like a load dyno but these engines produce only between 2 and 8 BHP with an RPM range of 25-45K RPM

 

The yourDyno setup seems perfect for what we need but I wanted to see if anyone here could make some suggestions for what could be used as a variable load for the dyno that will work in the HP and RPM range. Also, will the yourDyno setup work at these RPM's?

Hi,

That's a cool application. No problem with the RPM, you just adjust the number of teeth on the trigger wheel appropriately. 

The best brake for this setup is the Klam K10 (choose the 192V version). It is slightly more than 1000Eur. It needs some gearing since its max RPM is 11000. In addition to the brake you need:

1 instrument unit
1 Eddy brake power supply
1 RPM sensor
1 load cell (20kg)

Trigger wheel will need to be machined. Mount it on the brake and calculate minimum 200 pulses per second on the lowers RPM of interest. 6-8 pulses is good. 

With this you have a professional dyno, capable of doing sweeps, steady state, etc with lots of sensors.
