Hi!

congratulations to the project! You've made a dream for many. I would like to buy electronics to manage my Telma Retarder. Reading the article description on the Eddy current brake control, specifies that the retarder has been powered at 192V. Was it enough to put the 8 windings in series?

Thanks!

Hi,

Thanks! Yes, Power to the people :-)!

If your telma is 24V, then you can put all 8 in series and you get 192V. Here is a good description of the rewiring you need to do:

Cheers!

The AD-72 has 8 coils supported between two outer pressings, rather than 8 coils on each side of a centre pressing (total 16 coils) as on the CC series reterders that are more common for this application. You can only wire your retarder for 96v total.

As long at the phase angle controller can handle the current, you should be able to drive a 96v retarder from a 240v supply, but the current spikes and load on the mains supply is going to be much greater.

You may be able to use a step down transformer, 240v- 120v is pretty common. You'll want to over-rate the transformer as it will run hotter with phase angle control.

Hi, I too have the option to use AD72 retarders. I see from above that 96v is the maximum voltage allowed. I hope to make a set of hub dynos using 2 x AD72 retarders.  Would it be possible to wire both of the retarders together? Giving a total of 16 coils in series so allowing them to run from a 192v supply?

Hi , doesn't the AD72 have eight (8) front coils and eight (8) rear coils ?

Hi,

No, it appears to be just 8 in total. Doesn't have a center plate. Each coil is 0.4 ohms

Yep ! Seems you are right going  by the PDF  you posted 8 coils only.

So there’s no chance to wire it to 192v at all?

You can wire two brakes in series and get 192v. The drawback is no individual control, but in many cases that's fine. Hub dyno?

No, I found an AD72-00 for a good price so wanted to know. But with this knowledge I let it pass
