Q&A Forum
Hi all,
Having a dyno has been a bucket list thing for me for decades. As it’s just for personal use I’m trying to think of ways to get it done using things I have lying around.
im happy for thoughts concerns and criticisms.
Imagine a ba falcon Ute. (I’m an Aussie.. think mini truck with 4.0L inline 6)
Cut all the cab out the way. Cut the chassis off the back. Flip it so the wheels face up. Remove the trans. Weld the diff centre to lock it. Connect driveshaft directly to engine.
Mount big fat slicks to a few different offset wheels. Add the necessary electronics from yourdyno.
Bearings on one engine mount like a hinge.
Other side have a load cell.
use the electronic fly by wire throttle body on the exhaust as a variable valve (with throttle position sensor feedback)
Park ur car on the slicks, strap it extremely well.
Is it a dyno?
Would the compression of a Barra (4L incline 6) be enough of a resistance with the throttle body acting like an exhaust brake?
im only currently looking to do my little 150hp (tops) FWD race car atm.
Other usesful thing would be the crank angle sensor for dyno speed sensor?
Welcome to the forum!
Hehe, that is an alternative dyno ;-). It sounds a bit scary to me and a few too many unknowns. I recommend getting a hold of a dyno roller instead. Up to 150HP you can do without the brake, just rely on the inertia of the roller(s), so the costs is not that high and much more likely to succeed. The rollers need to be a few hundred kilos, I can help you calculate. Good luck!
I do tend to think outside the box. I have been looking for a roller, but they’re few and far between. And expensive.
if I find something I’ll take you up on the offer to calculate if it will be ok.
