Hello, I was wondering if anyone has used the software feature to control a valve with a stepper motor (as i see it documented on the site, but it says for WATER BRAKE control) i was wondering if there was a control valve suitable for 50-60GPM OIL (or whatever flow is needed for a 120Ft Lb compatible gear pump) i was also wondering if max speed was 3500RPM at input shaft and lets say i reduce 2:1 to allow for 7000RPM measuring (direct engine) would i be cutting my mesurment resolution or power handling in half?

Hi,

The stepper motor is equally good at controlling a valve for a hydraulic brake.

It is normal that the brake has lower RPM than the engine. Very few brakes can take the high RPM it gets when connected directly to the engine (water brakes can). So you gear it down with a gear box or motorcycle chain/sprocket.

If you half the RPM, the torque doubles but the HP stays the same. The gear box introduce a small loss, so the reading will be slightly lower than compared with testing directly on the engine. This can be compensated for.

thanks kindly, so let's say in testing 200NM at dyno input shaft; so would I then require a 400NM handling brake with the 2:1 reduction? or are you saying with 2:1 reduction I would require 100NM handling brake. thank you for your clear answers.

sorry that NM was confusing, I'm trying to decide between a gear pump or an electric eddy brake,  i am trying to build a small ATV type dyno, i don't expect to see much more then 300ft lbs tq. I now plan on doing a roller style setup (i have tons of sch80 pipe, and material). what would you suggest for measurement accuracy, i was told i want to make a sturdy frame and have as little vibration as possible (load cell noise)

i was looking at the 200 or 400NM versions of this brake but it doesnt look very HD, and not sure this 24 volts can be wired for 96 volts for the preferred speeddevices controller
