Hello,

I found this fantastic website today. I am building a engine test stand and had the idea to ad a simple dyno. I remeberd that I had seen the hydraulic dyno test on youtube a few years ago and now I'm here.

The idea ist to connect the hydraulic pump direct at the clutch using an old clutch housing from a gearbox.

The absolute max power output that my engines have is 140HP and 230Nm torque.

Normaly it is 69HP and 136Nm and 90HP with 180Nm

Max rpm is 5000U/min

Is there any solution that I don't need a gear reduction?

I found pumps they are good enough for the power but they are listed with max 2500U/min. Is it possible to use such a pump?

I found here also that a few guys use a Telma break. They are more expensive and in germany hard to find. But are they good for 5000 U/min (absolute max) highest HP output is at less than 4500 U/min and max torque under 4000 U/min.

Could a Telma AE 30-35 work with my engines?

Is it possible to hold one of these engines at a fix rpm while the engine is running with his max power output at this rpm?

Thanks a lot, Sebastian

Hi,

Yes, most hydraulic pumps top out at 3000 or 3500 RPM. I don't think you will find one that can do 5000 RPM. A gearing is quite easy to do though, for example via a motorcycle chain/sprockets. This is a simple, cheap solution.

Eddy current brakes are also limited in RPM. Some go to 4000, I think I have seen 4500. You may be able to find one that can take 5000, you would need to search around. If you could go for a geared eddy brake, that is a great solution.

Water brakes can easily take 5000 RPM though, or even double that. They are very often used to test engines directly on the crank. Unfortunately, water brakes are quite expensive too.

Good luck!
Jostein

Thanks for you answer.

I found tecnical specifications for a Telma AE 30-32

This is able to handel 5000 U/min and has a max brake torque from 350Nm

The RPM /max power diagram also fits perfect for my engine.

damned, that looks like it make more sense to spend more money.....

Then you should be good to go :-)! It is a great solution. I guess I have looked mostly at specs of larger brakes, so great to know that the AE 30-32 can take 5000RPM.

There are Chinese versions too, maybe you find one that is cheaper that also can take the RPM.
