ENG RPM setup

I'm trying to connect the msd tach signal pickup to ENG RPM input. I am already using RPM 1 and RPM2. The MSD module is already working all the way to the octocoupler. I was able to verify that because octo board has a little red led and that is in sync with eng RPM.  OUTPUT from October has connection for gnd sig out and vcc.  I connected gnd from octo to 0V and sig out from octo to signal on yourdyno.  I set up rpm 1 and rpm 2 to dyno rollers.  ENG RPM I setup to eng pickup I then start car and yourdyno sees nothing.  YOURDYNO manual says that it has an internal pull up resistor but I don't see 5v on any of the 3pins for ENG RPM connector.  I'm almost tempted to connect 5v to the vcc on the octocoupler but that will act as a  pull up resistor on the octo side. YourDyno Manual  says do not add a pull up resistor.  I'm a bit lost here.  I think that if my yourdyno box has an internal pull up resistor I should have 5v on one of the pins coming out of the yourdyno box for ENG RPM.  My yourdyno box has 3 pin connection (shield, 0v, and signal), no +5 or 5v like documentation says.

Hi,

For the Eng RPM you can connect an inductive clamp, which is much better than the MSD. This one for example from Innovate Motorsport. With this you just clamp over the coil wire (low voltage side).

If you want to use the MSD, then connect to RPM2 and configure RPM2 to be the Engine RPM source. RPM2 has an internal (strong) pullup, and you need the Sparkfun optocoupler board between YourDyno and the MSD.

Ahh.  Ok. Darn, I just spent on this MSD. Lol.

Rpm 1 and rpm 2 are taken for the 2 brakes. I have an old timing light with clamp you think I can wire it up to that?  It's got a shield and the center wire.

@abuen you can try the timing light, but the proper clamp from Innovate is likely better.
