AD72-00 suitable?

Hi guys,

We're looking into building our engine dyno using the yourdyno equipment. We've got some questions we'd like to get confirmed since most of this is new to us.

-easy things first, if we plan to add the environmental sensor kit, does this make use of the 3 aux inputs? Can we both use the environmental sensors and the three aux inputs at the same time?

-we'd like to know if the Telma AD72-00 ( https://www.telmausa.com/Downloads/OC442068.pdf) is suitable for our plan. We've read that this is an 8x12V coil unit, 0.4Ohm per coil. Putting 8 of 'em in series give 96V, 30Amp draw, correct?

We want to test our engine 600Nm mid / 500Nm peak/ 600HP / 8000rpm on the dyno, which (after gear ratio) is right within the limits of this Telma brake. 

If we want to use the of-the-shelf sportdevices PWS3, it can only deliver 23Amp @ 100V correct? Would this mean that we can only use the brake at about 75% of the spec torque? What would be the best way to circumvent this problem if we would like to use the AD72-00 unit? Are there bigger power supplies you can recommend? Or is the AD72 a bad choice for other reasons?

-As far as the mains supply, what supply should one use? Is a single 230 phase, 16A (EU) supply adequate for such a unit?

I can answer some of that.

Environmental sensors are seperate from the aux inputs since they are inside the bluebox and part of the pcb.
That brakes is a bit too close to the limit of what you want to be testing. As it gets hotter its holding capacity drops so even with a fan going on it id estimate youd only hold a steady load for a few seconds before it creeps away.

Cant help with the PSU specifications.

Hi , how much money and engineering do you want to throw at your project?   I have seen two telma retarders coupled together no gearbox reduction , straight run BUT the pillow block bearings had a oil feed lubrication system with a heat exchange also. The disc rotors were each encapsulated via a sealed fabricated body which were water sprayed for recirculated cooling system and run through a heat exchange and the coils had some water piping plumbed into them too. When i seen it run it had a BBChysler that cranked out 800+BHp@8500RPM. He had a 30,000lt above ground water tank supply that percolated like a electric coffee kettle in 30 minutes if EFI steady state testing was being done. Then they had to put slabs of big ice cubes to lower the water temperature quickly otherwise he would have to wate several days to dissipate the heat.

The owner at the time of the dyno said next stage was cooling towers but he had the system up for sale.

The dyno and all the accessories associates with it occupied a large amount of floor space.

Which i was negotiating a price for his whole setup. I have some photographs in one of my photo albums will find a pic and post it.

Old topic bit that is a sick setup there. 

for the topic starter best bet would be to score a big Schenck or Zollner or similar watercooled eddy current brake. The aircooled AD unit will only take 500 hp for maybe 10-15 seconds. I was once at Mercedes in Stuttgart and in their bin was the coolest brake ive come acrross. It was a 3 rotor Zöllner watercooled with 12k rpm capability and 450 kW steady state. I wasnt able to rescue it unfort :/ 

 

most schenck brakes of this power have only a single bigger diameter rotor and have a much lower max allowed rpm.
