300 HP chassis dyno pump selection

I'm in the beginning phases of building a 300 HP chassis dyno for a motorcycle.  I need some input on what pump, or pumps, to use to achieve the 300HP threshold.  My drum will be 24" and bike my tire is 26.5" so the drum will turn about 7500 RPM.  I know that I'll need a gear reduction in order to get down to pump RPM.

I also want to be able to "steady state" test so I'll have to use some type of electronic flow valve.

Any input on pumps, control valves and load cell would be much appreciated.

Hi,

300 hp is very high for a hydraulic dyno. You easily find water brakes or eddy current brakes capable of 300 hp though. That is a better solution.

One main challenge is indeed the pump. You want a pump which is very inefficient at 300hp, and that can be run over its spec, such that the flow and pressures are reasonable but still stable. You will not find this information in the spec sheet of a pump, and I am not recommending this option. If you dimension it per the spec, you will need a very expensive pump and the flow will be VERY high. I know some people are testing snow mobiles of  200+hp with hydraulic brakes, you can check with a group called "Tuners corner" on facebook, they are quite active. Maybe they have some tips on pump selection.

Or go with an eddy current brake!

I had thought of using multiple pumps, say 2 pumps capable of 150 HP each with a load cell on each.  Use a single servo to operate both control valves simultaneously.

Ever try that?

It may be possible. You could either send the flow through the same restriction valve (which will get very hot) or as you say control two valves simultaneously.

What pump and control valve would you suggest for 150 hp?  I would like to control the valves electronically either directly or indirectly through servo or stepper.

There are some tips here:  http://yourdyno.com/choosing-the-right-hydraulic-pump/

There are some examples of flow control valves here:  http://yourdyno.com/brakeabsorber-dynos/
